Children

Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these."

(Matthew 19:14)

Welcome! At Damascus UMC we are committed to providing a loving and safe environment where all children can learn about discipleship and grow with God. We have lots of programs and ministries available to enrich their spiritual journey!

Sunday School

Sunday School begins in September and ends in May. Classes are held at 9:30am (between our two worship services) and are available for 3 year olds through adults. With our caring and knowledgeable teachers, and our Sunday School curriculum, we seek to share Biblical knowledge and Christian living. In essence we are training our children as young disciples of Jesus Christ!

We have an Open Registration so that students may join our classes at any time during the school year. Simply complete a Sunday School Registration Form and turn it in to the child's Sunday School teacher.  When a child enters 3rd grade, we love to present him/her with a brand new Bible.  Please let us know how the Bible should be inscribed by completing this form.

Special Buddy Program

We welcome all of God's children into our Sunday School program. We recognize that some children need a little extra care; and so, we have a team of adults who are ready to accompany any child with special needs.

Here at Damascus UMC we offer a variety of options for children to express their faith through music, theater and art.

  • Colorful Hands of Jesus - Puppet Ministry, 2nd-5th grades
  • Cherubs - Vocal choir, age 4 1/2 to 2nd grade
  • Choristers - Vocal choir, 3rd-5th grades
  • Inspiration Ringers - Handbell choir, 2nd-5th grades

In addition to the programs above we also offer at least one musical theater production for children to participate in each year. For more information about these programs contact Polly Baldridge or click here to visit our Music and Arts Ministry webpage.

Learning About Communion Classes

Children in 2nd-5th grades and their parents are invited to join our Learning about Communion Classes held during Lent each year. The classes comprise five one-hour sessions and both the child and his/her parent/guardian attend each session.

Each class is limited to 10 families. A commitment to attend all five sessions is important and will help to make the experience more meaningful to your child.

The children have lots of fun learning about communion, making commemorative banners, and even making home-made bread that is used in the final session when the class celebrates communion on the altar. For more information contact the church office or Cathy Scarbrough (301) 972-6844.

Vacation Bible School (VBS)

We welcome all children from age 4 through 6th grade to come to Vacation Bible School. VBS will be the week of July 24-28, 2017 from 9am to 12:15pm each day.  Please print a registration form and turn it into the church office.  Thanks!

Youth helpers going into 7th - 12th grade are also needed and most welcome to help.  They will receive Student Service Learning (SSL) hours for the week. Youth helpers need to contact Pastor Amanda to sign up to help during VBS.

Safe Sanctuary

In 1996 and again in 2004, the General Conference of the United Methodist Church adopted resolutions aimed at reducing the risk of child sexual abuse in the church. As a result, each local congregation is required to develop and implement its own Safe Sanctuary Policy in line with General Conference recommendations.

Thus, in covenant with all United Methodist congregations, we the Damascus United Methodist Church, adopt this policy regarding safety of children and youth in our church.

We pledge to conduct our ministries in ways that assure the safety and spiritual growth of all children, youth, and adults participating in church-sponsored activities.
